The Cool Kids – History of Chuck Inglish & Mikey Rocks

As you may already know, I’m a huge fan of the Chicago-based hip-hop group The Cool Kids. Members of the group are: Chuck Inglish (real name: Evan Ingersoll) and Mikey Rocks (real name: Antoine Reed). They are currently signed to the independent record label: Chocolate Industries and have their own label entitled: C.A.K.E. Recordings.

They are native to Chicago, Illinois (Mikey Rocks) and Detroit, Michigan (Chuck Inglish) – though you would never guess that one of them is from Detroit by listening to their music. (The Chi-Town gets represented way more). Chuck Inglish is the main producer for the group and uses Reason 3.0 to create some quality instrumentals.

How The Cool Kids duo met:

Chuck and Mikey met back in 2005 when Mikey found an instrumental on the internet that Chuck Inglish had produced. Chuck met Mikey to discuss the sale of his beat. They eventually ended up doing a recording session for several hours. They both had a lot in common: they were inspired by 1980′s hip-hop artists like Eric B. & Rakim. Chuck Inglish eventually began promoting their material that they recorded together.

The Flosstradamus connection + performance

Flosstradamus eventually booked them for a performance. At their performance at the “Town Hall Pub” – the two artists hooked up with Dj Diplo who said he could release a mixtape of their recorded tracks. That mixtape was released with the title: Totally Flossed Out – and is a short mixtape with dope tracks. The Cool Kids were then offered a deal by Dj A-Trak to sign to his label: Fool’s Gold. They signed, but only released two tracks on that label: ’88 and I Rock.

Their Chocolate Industries label and upcoming projects

Since then, The Cool Kids signed with the Chocolate Industries label. They have an album entitled When Fish Ride Bicycles ready to be released in 2008. They have already released The Bake Sale EP which features 10 tracks that are all quality.

They also have a recent mixtape entitled That’s Stupid (The Mixtape) available for their fans to download online. The That’s Stupid Mixtape features some of their newer songs – around 5-6 tracks. All of the songs are quality hip-hop music.

Chuck Inglish is the producer

An interesting fact to note is that: Chuck Inglish has been the producer for all tracks that have been released thus far. In my opinion, Chuck is a dope producer and lyricist. Mikey has been heavily involved with rapping, but has recently been getting more involved with the production aspects. Both Chuck and Mikey use Reason (made by Propellerhead Software Co.) for the production of beats.

Where have they toured?

The Cool Kids have been on tour as an opening act for M.I.A. They are set to perform at the Rock The Bells hip-hop festival as well. They have toured Australia back in February of 2008. Their single “Black Mags” has been featured in a late 2007 Rhapsody commercial.

In fact, watching the commercial was how I found out about the group. I heard the dope beat come on and saw Chuck and Mikey rapping. I proceeded to search for lyrics to that song and I downloaded it A.S.A.P.

Other places that you will hear The Cool Kids:

They have also collaborated with Lil Wayne for the track “Gettin’ It” – which will appear on Dj Benzi’s upcoming album entitled “Get Right.” The Cool Kids are also featured with their song “’88” in the video games MLB 2K8 and NBA LIve ’08.

The (addicting) television series Entourage also features “I Rock,” which really puts Mikey Rocks under the spotlight. And, even though I sincerely hate Rolling Stone’s reviews of music nowadays, they did give props to The Cool Kids by listing them in their “Ten Artists to Watch in 2008” section.
