Top 25 Hip Hop Rap Songs (August 2012)

It’s been a long freaking time since I’ve posted up on this site, and it’s really lame actually. I have been in a major life rut trying to get back on my feet. Basically just when I think life is getting better it turns around and smacks me down to rock bottom, no (lamborghini) mercy. Then at rock bottom I somehow fall even deeper and am smashed into emotional submission. I guess the death of someone, a brutal breakup, looking for a new job with bennies, will challenge anyone’s spirits a little. Anyways, I’m going to start posting up some hip hop again just to regain my sanity.

Since I generally always rock with a Top 10 Hip Hop Songs post to start the week, this is no exception. I’ve been off of my grind for awhile so some of these tracks may seem old, but these are what I’ve been banging this summer. I have been listening to everything from Tity Boi mixtapes and trying to decipher the massively skewed autotune of Future. I may have missed some bangers, but that’s probably because I haven’t listened to certain albums yet. I have a lot of catching up to do, but these are my top picks for the summer thus far based on listening to a fuck ton of mixtapes.

It has been about a year since I’ve last posted up my top picks.  Last time doing so was back in August 2011!  Talk about majorly slackin.  Anyways  I desperately need to polish up on my writing skills, critical thinking, analysis, etc.  Although I made a Top 10 list, there are some bonus bangers below – I listed off 25 total tracks for you to check out.  It seems as though everywhere I go, the song “Cashin Out” by the amusingly named “Cash Out” has been spammed through radio waves so much that I had no choice but to put it up at the top.  It’s probably the most played track of the summer on my playlists, so be sure to hit that up if you don’t have it.

Consequence – Everybody Told Me Video (Official) (prod. Kanye West)

Consequence released his new official “Everybody Told Me video” for the masses as a means to attack GOOD Music, but it’s (ironically) produced by Kanye West. The hilarious thing about Cons is the fact that if he didn’t have production by Kanye West, he would not be on most people’s radar – that’s just real talk. I know he has history and goes way back, but come on, who would you rather listen to: Kanye West or Cons? Pusha T or Cons? Q-Tip or Cons? Most people would not take Consequence in those questions. I honestly liked Consequence, but splitting GOOD Music was basically like committing musical suicide.

This song was originally supposed to be included on the “Cons TV album” which was supposed to come out on GOOD Music. His goal with this video was to give you an in-depth look into his soul via an adaptation of the “Tornado scene” from “The Wizard of Oz” movie. The thing about this song is that I think it’s pretty dope and it doesn’t make me hate Consequence. I just wish he would focus on actually trying to improve his skills and make awesome music instead of attacking someone else… Anyways, the video was self-directed by Consequence and this world premiere kicks off the “MOD3 Week: The Campaign of Terror” (a.k.a. his attempt at ethering GOOD Music).  Did it work? Ahh, not really just look at how well the “Watch The Throne album” did…

Consequence – Everybody Told Me Video (Official)

Let’s face it, Consequence is somewhat delusional thinking that he’s one of the greatest of all time because Beyonce knows him. I guarantee she is not looking out for his new music, seriously, why would she be when she’s friends with Kanye West and married to Jay-Z? And you have beef with them and are acting like a little spoiled kid so you’re dropping names trying to start some fear-based beef that Pusha T, Kanye West, and GOOD Music is not going to respond to, they aren’t into competing with artists that aren’t on their level. Jay Z & Kanye West – Otis Video (Official + Download)

Jay Z and Kanye West just dropped the officialOtis video” for you all to check out through Rocafella Records. Obviously if you’re even remotely a fan of present day hip hop music (or new music in general), you should have bought the “Watch the Throne album” this past Tuesday. This Otis Redding sampled track made for a great single and great contribution to creativity in hip hop these days. Kanye and Jay were more creative than 99% of artists with a sample from Otis Redding’s song “Try A Little Tenderness.”  Below you can check out the video that just dropped and see what’s good… Nothing too crazy, but I think that sometimes it’s better to just keep it simple.  No need to go all Dr. Dre on the videos every time.

Jay Z & Kanye West – Otis Video (Official)

I like how they kept this video simple and will say that Spike Jonze did a nice job with the directing.  This song is just a taste of some of the creativity on the entire album, and if you haven’t already bought a copy, it’s not too late.  I expect it to be the top seller of the week and hold down a spot on the top 10 albums for awhile.  I’m hoping that their next single is “Niggas In Paris” but they have a lot of options and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s any of the others…  In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a video for 5+ tracks on this project… Although it’s a little bit early to wish for this, a collaborative follow up (even if it’s not titled “Watch The Throne 2“) would be nasty. Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne (Album Review + Download + Official Production Credits)

Kanye West and Jay-Z finally released the “Watch the Throne album” for purchase to all of the people who preordered it in advance. This project had a lot of hype surrounding it and although a lot of people felt like these two were under pressure to perform up to standards, Jay-Z said that the pressure really isn’t there anymore (in an interview with Angie Martinez) prior to the release. Then he discussed why nobody has been able to find a “Watch The Throne album leak” online (mediafire, hulkshare, usershare, zshare, etc.). I’m really glad they put a silence to the early leakers because hearing music that the artists don’t intend to be heard in advance is just a lame move.

Jay-Z & Kanye West – Watch The Throne (Album Artwork)

People seriously think they’re cool and in the know for having music in advance or what? You seriously have no special powers; you’re just a lame fool who thinks he’s cool for leaking stuff. Anyways, this album has been in development for a long time and I know that the two worked really hard on being as creative as possible and pushing existing musical boundaries. They worked with a variety of talents and did a lot of recording in Hawaii to get the creative juices flowing. Click here to read more.. »

Top Rap Hip Hop Songs July 2011

Here are the Top Hip Hop Songs for July 2011 (specifically as of July 9, 2011) that I listed for the people.  It’s been a whole month since I’ve done a list of the top hip hop music or rap music songs for the people (see: Top Hip Hop Songs for June 2011). I think that I’ve got a really solid balance between underground, mainstream, and emerging artists. In my list, I gravitate towards what I think are the best songs and I base my choices on a combination of factors. Too many people these days think that music is all about lyrics, and that’s just not true.

There are plenty of lyrical artists out there who cannot get a good beat to save their asses. Additionally, there are artists that are lyrical, but don’t have a catchy melody that’s easy for people to understand. There are also artists out there that get awesome beats, but cannot rap their way out of a wet paper bag. Anyways, here goes the top hip hop tracks for July 2011 as of today (July 9th).

1. A.D.H.D. – Kendrick Lamar

This track is off of the Kendrick Lamar Section.80 album which is in stores now. The album is a classic, and although I was debating on whether or not I should put “Ronald Reagan Era” up here, I think I’ll save it for my next list. A.D.H.D. was my favorite track off of the album, and I love when Kendrick says “fuck dot/dat” in the chorus.  I know dude has been solid from the get-go, but he really stepped his game up since he first started.  I’m not going to dickride though like the other bloggers and just say that he’s the best artist in the digital age.  No doubt he’s great though, that’s why I have him with the top track (Top Dawg Entertainment stand up)! CyHi Da Prynce – Royal Flush 2 Mixtape (Download + Official Track Listing + Analysis)

Cyhi Da Prynce is an artist that is currently signed and affiliated with Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music. You may have heard him from the G.O.O.D. Friday songs that Kanye released for his fans before “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” was released. Additionally, you may remember hearing him on the album. Anyways, he was on “So Appalled” from the actual album that you may have recalled and dropped a pretty solid verse on there. Since that time period, he started performing live and made an appearance on the “Racks on Racks Remix” by YC with an all-star lineup as well as on B.o.B’s track “Higher” which also featured Playboy Tre and Bun B.

CyHi Da Prynce – Royal Flush 2 Album Artwork

Since then, he also released his “Royal Flush mixtape,” which was pretty solid. However, it wasn’t as good as Cyhi Da Prince’s latest “Royal Flush 2 mixtape” which you can download for free online. Although there were a few tracks that I liked on the initial Royal Flush project such as: “Sideways,” “Bunch of Rounds,” “Fast Lane,” and “Ring Bellz” which was my favorite track from that project. Although the first tape in the series is worth getting, Cyhi Da Prynce really stepped it up with the Royal Flush 2 mixtape. So let’s take a look at the official track listing for this project and analyze it a little bit. Click here to read more.. »

Kanye West & Jay-Z – Watch The Throne (Album Artwork + Track Listing + Official Preview)

As you already should know, the new Kanye West and Jay-ZWatch The Throne album” is the next most anticipated thing in the world of hip hop music. They released H.A.M. (Hard as a Motherfucker) back in the day and now the project is finally going to see the light of day. Anyways, the official project will feature a total of 10 tracks and will be able to be purchased on iTunes as well as through other outlets sometime this late summer. The official project is rumored to be scheduled to have an early August release date, but you and I know that tons of rappers set a release date or give their fans an idea of when it’s going to be released and then push the album back. UPDATE: Read my official “Watch The Throne album review.”

Watch The Throne Album Art (Official)

I don’t think that they’re going to pull a Dr. Dre move with this one (e.g. never release their album), but I wouldn’t be totally shocked if for some reason they decided to push it back. Below is the official track listing and above is the official Watch The Throne album artwork. I personally wasn’t that impressed with the artwork, but am not going to complain either, I don’t think it’s “bad” per se, but just looks like a fairly elegant design. I was more impressed with Kanye West’s artwork for “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” as well as the artwork for the single “H.A.M.Click here to read more.. »

Big Sean Finally Famous (Album Review + Download)

It’s about time Big Sean released his Finally Famous album! As one of his longtime fans, it seems like we have been waiting for years for this to drop. Ever since he got signed by G.O.O.D. Music, he really has stepped his game up and taken his career to a whole nother level. The Finally Famous album has been in the making for a long ass time so it’s only right that the project got a release date and was actually released on the scheduled date! Most artists these days push their albums back, but when you’re Mr. I Do It, boiiiii, there’s no reason to push your work back; it’s going to sell!

Big Sean Finally Famous Album Artwork

Plus when you’re featured on the Derek Rose Adidas commercial all summer with a clip of your single “I Do It,” you’re probably going to generate even more interest. Well, Big Sean stepped up to the plate for D Town (Detroit) and delivered some solid music. Let’s break the album down track from the perspective of Yung Drew. I’ll let you know what I liked about it, what I didn’t like, whether it sucked, and whether it was solid. I think I’m going to start a new series of hip hop reviews for the people so if you like this one, be sure to keep checking back.

Producer Lex Luger Talks About Making Beats

Lex Luger talks about making beats for Waka Flocka Flame, Rick Ross, as well as working with Kanye West for the song “H.A.M.” No doubt dude has talent… Although a lot of people say his beats all sound like a slight modification of his past beats (e.g. recycled), I think they are all pretty fucking hot. Dude has become popular and for good reason – his beats fucking knock. I’m just being true to myself by saying fuck the Lex haters out there, he makes trap beats that knock… Hard In Da Paint/BMF/H.A.M. are all prime examples… Plus he worked with Wiz Khalifa on Cabin Fever mixtape and Juicy J for “Rubba Band Business” mixtapes…
